Law and Policy Section

The Law and Policy Section (LPS) advises and assists the Assistant Attorney General on legal and policy issues. Working with the Office of Legislative Affairs, LPS coordinates the Environment and Natural Resources Division’s legislative program. LPS also represents the Department of Justice on interagency groups of a variety of issues that relate to the mission of the Division. LPS also litigates amicus cases and undertakes other specially assigned litigation projects at the trial and appellate levels. Other duties include monitoring citizen suits; responding to citizen mail, congressional, and FOIA requests; and serving as the Division’s ethics officers. LPS attorneys also coordinate the Division’s activities on international environmental matters and environmental justice matters.

Duties of the unpaid undergraduate intern position include: attending congressional hearings and reporting on environmental legislation; researching legal and policy issues; and providing support for the section’s amicus litigation.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, pass a mandatory background check, and be willing to commit for about 25-30 hours per week. Applicants should be either enrolled as undergraduates during the internship, or planning on returning to their school in the time period following the conclusion of the internship.

Watershed Protection Outreach Intern

Solano Resource Conservation District Two Paid Internships Available

Position Title: Watershed Protection Outreach Intern

Introduction:
The employer is the Board of Directors of the Solano Resource Conservation District, and day to day supervision will be by the Environmental Education Program Manager. The position is temporary, part-time, and non-exempt (hourly). Medical, dental and vision benefits are not provided.

Location
Duties for this position will take place at Lake Berryessa in Napa County. Occasional requirements will be held at the Dixon Field Office of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in Solano County California.

Dates, Days and Times of Employment:
Training: Monday, May 16th (may be altered if needed)
Outreach begins on May 27th (Memorial Day Weekend)–September 5th (Labor Day Weekend) 20 hrs/wk: Friday (6pm-8pm), Saturday & Sunday (8:00am-12:00pm) & (2pm – 7pm)

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide surveys and distribute watershed protection education materials to boaters and campers including one-on-one outreach on water quality
• Inspection of boats for invasive species
• Write weekend summaries
• Organize data collected each weekend
• Compose newsletter articles about watershed protection
• Be willing to wear the “Bilgee” costume
• Other duties as assigned by the Education Program Manager

Desired Qualifications
The district is looking for a junior or senior level undergraduate student or graduate student who has taken classes in environmental science, environmental education, watershed science, ecology or similar field. The person must have excellent interpersonal skills (especially speaking with the public), exhibit competence in public outreach, be extremely organized and comfortable working alone or in a team. Additional skills in graphic design are highly desired.

Compensation:
$13-$14 per hour — Depending on experience.
Mileage provided for driving around the lake.
Weekend lodging (Friday & Saturday) is available at the lake.

EcoFood Corps Sustainability Internship

EcoFood Corps student sustainability interns work within the UC Davis Dining Services

Department of Sustainability and Nutrition to engage students, dining guests and dining services employees about food system sustainability and UC Davis Dining Services sustainability efforts.

 

Various focuses within the EcoFood Corps internship will be available, and include:

Dining Services/Student Housing Gardens

UC Davis Campus Growers/Producers

Resident Dining Engagement

Retail Dining Engagement

Waste Reduction, Recycling, Composting

Dining Services sustainability-related programs involving EcoFood Corp interns include: Meatless Mondays, UC Davis East Quad Farmers Market, UC Davis Student Farm field-to-table, EcoFood Corps garden, Segundo housing area garden, Healthy Planet, Healthy Me education, waste audits, campus food systems tracking and assessment, Farm-to-College events, resident hall floor programs, and more!

The internship will last through the full 2011/2012 academic year, with a time commitment between 4-6 hours/week, depending on emphasis (max 10 hours/week). In addition to weekly tasks and educational activities associated with their given emphasis, sustainability interns will have a weekly team meeting and schedule two hours of dedicated office-hour time in the Sustainability and Nutrition Office.

Interns report to UC Davis Dining Services Sustainability Manager, Dani Lee and Sustainability & Education Coordinator, Sara Kosoff.

This is a paid position.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Characteristics:

  • Undergraduate student at the University of California, Davis
  • Interest in researching and communicating aspects of food system sustainability
  • Ability to communicate effectively; comfortable with public speaking
  • Ability to communicate over email in a timely manner
  • Good teamwork skills; comfortable being self-directed in projects
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability and desire to work within Sodexo, a contracted food services company
  • Strength in Adobe Creative Suite programs helpful, not required
  • Gardening experience helpful, not required

Timing:  Immediate with end date being situation specific, and potentially leading to a long term position

Description of role:  Seeking an individual to join a highly dynamic company which is the leader in combining emerging organics recycling, renewable energy generation and sustainable / local agriculture.  We envision the role being one which will be multi-faceted and one which will directly interface with the Company’s principals and founders on a daily basis.  Primary responsibilities in the immediate term will include managing a research project focused on sustainable agriculture, with a particular focus on Controlled Environment Agriculture (see http://www.cornellcea.com/ for a description of the leading institute for CEA research which was established by one of our board members).  The research project will include desktop diligence as well as extensive amount of interaction with industry participants.  It will also include financial modeling.  Strong interpersonal skills and modeling skills are critical.  Additional responsibilities will include modeling of Renewable Energy projects including the use of tax-advantaged financing structures.
