Caltrans Volunteer Program
The Caltrans Volunteer Program offers (non-paid) training opportunities that will assist people in fulfilling their career development goals. Participants in the Program can work a variable schedule to accommodate their needs as well as the needs of Caltrans.  A maximum or minimum number of hours is not a requirement of this program.  Some volunteers choose to work in fields they are interested in, have current or prior schooling in, or work in areas they know little about and gaining exposure to a different career environment.  For more information about our volunteer program please visit our website @ http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/jobs/SA/vol-wel.htm

Sustainable Design Student Assistant IV
Position Description
September 2009
 
 
Architects and Engineers is looking for a student to provide sustainable design support to project managers.  This position will be for 12 hours per week for 3-9 months.  This position may be extended dependent on project needs.
 
Functions
1.   Facilitate and support the LEED documentation and submittal process for campus projects (VMIF, VM3B, Coffee House Renovation, King Hall, etc.)
2.   Support the analysis of new strategies, technologies, materials and energy conservation measures for campus buildings.
3.   Organize, prepare and oversee Post Occupancy Surveys for recent projects.
4.   Validate use levels and electrical equipment use for existing buildings.
5.   Assist with the development of presentations for other campus units regarding green building issues.
6.   Coordinate with efforts of other campus units and student groups working in related areas.
 
Skills, Knowledge, and Ability (SKA’s)
1.   Coursework in architecture, environmental science, or engineering.
2.   Understanding and familiarity of the USGBC LEED BD&C program.
3.   Familiarity with building or landscape design, engineering, or construction.
4.   Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Biodiesel Makers

This is an opportunity to learn how to make biodiesel. This project will convert waste oil from restaurants to biodiesel for use in tractors at the Student Farm. Each volunteer will have to dedicate themselves to a regular schedule that they can commit to operating the biodiesel equipment.

CCE Research Intern

Each intern will be expected to choose an area of specialization among: transportation, food, water, energy, waste, consumerism, environmental justice, housing, personal sustainability and local activism.  Interns have the option of choosing one or more areas of specialization. Each intern will also be expected to write up the results of their research in a usable format that will be then be incorporated into a better practices handbook for the Davis community.  The final product from this internship is a handbook ready for digital or traditional publication.

UC Davis Arboretum Naturalist Internship

Arboretum Naturalist Interns will lead elementary aged children on school field trips throughout the Arboretum. Interns learn about the local environment and adaptations to California habitats.  Interns receive extensive training in outdoor education techniques and strategies, creative teaching approaches for children, and work with a team of other interns and community volunteers.
