The UC Davis chapter of California Student Sustainability Coalition (commonly referred to as the CSSC) is a student led organization that is part of the larger, statewide CSSC. We have chapters at UC, CSU, community college
and private university campuses across the state. It is our
mission to unite and empower the California community of higher
education to collaboratively and nonviolently transform ourselves and
our institutions based on our inherent social, economic, and ecological
responsibilities. The CSSC creates and endorses campaigns that span
many university campuses in California. This power in numbers gives
substantial weight to our work that has resulted in significant impacts
since our conception in 2003.
CSSC meets on Mondays at 7pm in the Experimental College Lounge (South Silo)
History and Achievements:
"Us against the problem" has
always been the credo of the CSSC since the very beginning. At UC
Davis, there has been a complete dedication to this adage.
The
UC Davis chapter of the CSSC, also know as the CSSC, began in 2003.
That very first year set a precedent that determined the path of the UC
Davis CSSC. The first year fostered projects like the Education for
Sustainable Living Program (ESLP) and the Sustainability Summit.
ESLP
created a web of learning and education that wove itself into the
campus and the community unlike any other course offered at UC Davis.
Not only did the class engage students and community members with
stimulating presenters, but it also empowered them to do amazing things
in the community. The Action Research Teams (ART) allowed students to
participate in projects ranging from a peddle-powered laptop charger to
informational videos about bike commuting to Sacramento. In fact, ESLP
projects and participants can be found in many facets of the community
and campus. Furthermore, it has given rise to new clubs that enhance
student life.
The Sustainability Summit, an annual event at the
end of each school year, is a perfect example of following the "us
against the problem" motto. The event features student, staff, faculty,
and administrator as speakers. It is an opportunity for all attendants
to network, inspire one another, and celebrate their accomplishments in
the last year. The Chancellor was a speaker at the 2008 Summit. Instead
of having speakers' rank crescendo up to his speech, the Chancellor was
flanked by innovative students. In the issue of preserving the
integrity of the Earth, we are all equals and we all need to work
together to make a difference.
Since the first trend-setting
year, we have worked towards forming positive relationships with the
administration. In projects like UC Go Solar, revising the UCOP's
Sustainable Transportation policy, Focus the Nation, Responsible
Investment, and most recently, The Green Initiative Fund, compromise
and mutual understanding has been at the heart of solution.
