CCE Research Intern

Each intern will be expected to choose an area of specialization among: transportation, food, water, energy, waste, consumerism, environmental justice, housing, personal sustainability and local activism.  Interns have the option of choosing one or more areas of specialization. Each intern will also be expected to write up the results of their research in a usable format that will be then be incorporated into a better practices handbook for the Davis community.  The final product from this internship is a handbook ready for digital or traditional publication.

 

Internship: Research

Choices of specialization: transportation, food, water, energy, waste, consumerism, environmental justice, housing, personal sustainability and local activism.  Interns have the option of choosing one or more areas of specialization.

Internship Description

1. Collect information
•    Current practices
o    How: contact local business owners, government officials, and experts of what the exact practices are and their impact on the environment.
o    E.g. where they get their energy from, where they buy their products from, where their waste goes, basically a where does it come from and where does it go  (input/output) type of information.
•    Other options implemented in other places\
o    How: Research through various news outlets to find out the newest developments in environmental policies and technologies. Detail how they work, and if they work, and challenges they are faced with.
•    Barriers to implementing better practices
o    How: Use survey results and focus results gathered to determine what the barriers to better practices are for Davis community members
•    2. Collate information in a usable format for students and community members
o    A guide detailing the current practices and their impact on the environment and community made available to the public.  A 'lay-person's' handbook.
o    A guide detailing the barriers to better practices and methods of overcoming the barriers for the use of the Campus Center for the Environment and other groups on campus interested in working on various projects. An 'expert's' handbook.



Internship Requirements
1. A background or interest in environmental policy/issues
2. Attention to detail and organization
3. Comfortable with communication
4. Work with a faculty mentor to facilitate project
5. Organize the information in a manner consistent with the guidelines for the Better Practices Handbook


Credit Distribution:
        Each internship will last one quarter, with the possibility of continuing
1 unit- 3-5 hours/week
2 units- 6-8
3 units 9+
Internship Purpose:
