Bottled water

How is water used today? Too many people today, water comes from a bottle. What is the truth behind bottled water?

The truth about  bottled water

Many people on the UC Davis campus drink from bottled water.  The way the bottles water companies advertise and portray bottled water may seem like it’s cleaner, purer, and of higher quality, but actually it’s not as clean as one may think.

The truth is… that bottled water is not cleaner and safe than most tap water according to a four year study done by the National Resources Defense Council. Their research found that in fact, 25% of bottled water is actually tap water (40 percent according to the government).  The FDA regulates bottles water, but the US EPA regulates public water. The EPA has a higher standard and regulation on water than the FDA meaning tap water is checked more regularly than bottled water. City tap water is filtered because of the regulations and standards it needs to uphold, but not all bottled water is filtered and disinfected.

Plastic=Pollution. Something you may have noticed is that bottled water is…well, bottled. Plastic has the potential to leach chemicals into your water. There is arsenic, radioactive solvents, and other chemicals that leach out of the plastic.

Another thing is that producing plastic water bottles requires a high amount of energy and petroleum which causes pollution. It takes 18 million barrels of oil to transport bottled water, and this number is growing every year. This pollution emitted into the environment can be easily prevented by not using plastic water bottles.

So what should I do? For those of you living in the dorms or even in apartments, it may seem more convenient just to buy water bottles.  But take this advice to stop buying plastic water bottles. Just filter your tap water and buy a reusable water bottle. Then simply refill your reusable water.  This will make you healthier, and greener.
